When purchasing a diamond, one of the most important factors to consider is its certification. A diamond grading report provides an independent evaluation of a diamond’s quality and characteristics, helping buyers understand exactly what they are purchasing.
Two of the most recognised diamond grading laboratories in the world are the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) and the International Gemological Institute (IGI). Both organisations evaluate diamonds using professional standards and the well-known 4Cs: cut, colour, clarity and carat weight.
While both laboratories provide reliable diamond grading, there are some differences in how their reports are commonly used in today’s jewellery market.
What is GIA?
The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) is a nonprofit gemological organisation founded in 1931 in California. GIA is best known for developing the 4Cs grading system, which has become the global standard used to evaluate diamond quality.
Diamonds submitted to GIA laboratories undergo a structured and anonymous grading process carried out by trained gemologists. A GIA grading report typically includes detailed information such as:
-
Diamond measurements and proportions
-
Colour and clarity grades
-
Cut grade (for round diamonds)
-
Polish and symmetry
-
Fluorescence
-
A clarity plot showing internal inclusions

Because of its long-standing reputation for consistency and strict grading standards, GIA certification is widely regarded as the benchmark for natural diamond grading within the jewellery industry.
GIA also provides reports for lab-grown diamonds. However, in recent years GIA introduced a different grading approach for lab-grown stones. Instead of the traditional colour and clarity scale used for natural diamonds, GIA now categorises lab-grown diamonds into broader quality descriptions such as Premium, Very Good, Good or Fair.
What is IGI?
The International Gemological Institute (IGI) was founded in 1975 and operates laboratories in major diamond centres around the world. IGI provides grading services for natural diamonds, lab-grown diamonds, coloured gemstones and finished jewellery.
Like GIA, IGI evaluates diamonds using the 4Cs grading system and provides detailed grading reports that include measurements, proportion diagrams and clarity characteristics.

One reason IGI is widely used in the market today is its experience with lab-grown diamond certification. IGI grading reports for lab-grown diamonds typically include the full colour and clarity scale (such as D–Z colour and FL–I clarity), as well as details about the diamond’s growth method, such as CVD (Chemical Vapour Deposition) or HPHT (High Pressure High Temperature).
Many IGI-certified diamonds are also laser-inscribed on the diamond’s girdle with the report number, allowing the diamond to be matched directly with its certificate.

Both laboratories follow professional grading standards and provide valuable information about a diamond’s quality. The most important factor is that the diamond has been graded by a reputable independent laboratory.
Choosing the Right Diamond
Both GIA and IGI grading reports provide valuable insight into a diamond’s quality and characteristics. The most important factor is that the diamond has been evaluated by a reputable independent laboratory, allowing for clear and confident comparison.
Beyond the certificate, it is equally important to consider the overall beauty of the diamond including its cut, proportions, brilliance and how it performs in different lighting conditions.
