Everyday Care — The Golden Rules

1. Remove

 

Jewellery should be the last thing you put on and the first thing you take off. Remove your pieces before sleeping, exercising, swimming, gardening, showering, or cleaning.

2. Clean

A gentle clean goes a long way. Wipe your jewellery with a soft, lint-free cloth after each wear to remove oils and residue. For a deeper clean, see our section below — or visit us in-store for a complimentary clean and inspection.

3. Store

Store each piece separately in a soft pouch or signature TCJ box to avoid scratches and tangles. Keep jewellery away from direct sunlight, moisture, and heat.

 

Caring for Different Materials & Gemstones

Gold & Platinum

• Clean gently using warm water, mild soap, and a soft toothbrush.

• Avoid harsh chemicals such as bleach or ammonia.

• Store pieces separately to prevent surface scratches.

Silver

• Use a specialised silver polishing cloth to remove tarnish.

• Keep silver jewellery in an airtight pouch when not in use to slow oxidisation.

Caring for Delicate Gemstones

Some gems need extra love and care.
Below are general hardness ratings on the Mohs scale (1–10), which measures resistance to scratching and impact:

 

For gemstones with a hardness of 8 and below, avoid ultrasonic or steam cleaners unless we’ve confirmed it’s safe for that specific gemstone.

Diamonds & Hard Gemstones

• Clean with mild soapy water and a soft brush.

• Ultrasonic cleaners are safe for most diamonds but avoid if the piece contains other delicate gemstones.

• Schedule an annual inspection to check claws and settings.

Opal — Naturally Delicate

Opal is renowned for its breathtaking play of colour — and its sensitivity.
To protect your opal jewellery:

• Avoid exposure to impact, heat, or sudden temperature changes (e.g., hot showers, saunas, or direct sunlight).

• Keep away from prolonged water contact — opals are porous and can absorb moisture.

• Never use ultrasonic cleaners or harsh solutions.

• Wipe gently with a soft, dry cloth after wearing.

• Store in a cool, stable environment — ideally in a padded box.

Please note: Cracks caused by impact, temperature change, or exposure to water/moisture are not considered manufacturing faults under our warranty. 

Pearls, Turquoise & Other Soft Gemstones

• These organic stones are sensitive to chemicals, perfumes, and cosmetics.

• Always put jewellery on after applying skincare or fragrance.

• Wipe with a damp soft cloth only — never submerge in water.

Cleaning & Maintenance

For most pieces:

1. Mix a few drops of mild soap in warm water.

2. Soak jewellery briefly (except opals and pearls).

3. Gently brush with a soft toothbrush.

4. Rinse and dry with a clean cloth.

Warranty, Repairs & Aftercare

Our warranty covers:

• Manufacturing defects in materials or craftsmanship.

It does not cover:

• Damage caused by wear and tear, impact, misuse, or exposure to chemicals or heat.

If your piece becomes damaged, please contact us — in most cases, we can offer repair or restoration services at a reduced rate.
