As storytellers of love and the moments that make it unforgettable, we’re always drawn to the stories that unfold when you least expect them. An and Phuong began quietly as workmates, before a new haircut, a little curiosity and a chance at a first date changed everything.

We’re delighted to share their beautiful engagement story, a love built on comfort, commitment and the simple joy of choosing each other, with plenty of good food and adventures along the way.

How did you both meet, and what defining moments in your relationship made you realise that they were the one? 

An: We first met through work, although we had actually been acquaintances during university. We’d chat every week or so, and eventually, I got a haircut. Somehow, that was enough to shift the mood and lead to our first date. One date turned into a few more, and as we got to know each other, we realised just how much we had in common. We quickly bonded over our shared love of good food and travelling, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Phuong: We actually met at work, and for the first two years, there was absolutely nothing romantic between us. I never really saw An through that lens and honestly never imagined that we would end up together. After the COVID lockdowns, we came back to work and An had a new haircut. For some reason, he just looked different to me. Maybe it was because I hadn’t seen him in a while, but there was something about his look and his energy that suddenly caught my attention. To my surprise, there were definitely some butterflies! I decided to make the first move and asked him to hang out. From there, things just naturally progressed. I think one of the most special parts of our story is that there was never any pressure or expectation. It just happened naturally, at a time when neither of us had really seen it coming. There wasn’t really one defining moment where I suddenly thought, “He’s the one.” For me, it was something that grew through all the little moments we shared. From the beginning, I always felt safe and comfortable around An. As our relationship grew, I noticed how consistently he prioritised us and how he showed me, through his actions, that he was committed to our relationship. It was never just about saying he loved me. An showed it in the way he supported me, made time for us and continued to choose our relationship every day. I think love is incredibly important, but for me, commitment is just as significant. Knowing that we were both willing to put effort into our relationship, communicate and continue choosing each other made me realise how special what we had was. More than anything, it’s how I feel when I’m with him that solidifies it for me. I feel safe, understood, supported and completely myself around him. There was never one moment that made me know he was the one; it was all those moments together that eventually made me realise that I couldn’t imagine building my life with anyone else.

What traits do you both appreciate most in each other?

An: I love how honest Phuong is and how much she looks after me. She genuinely enjoys spending time together, and I really appreciate how caring and thoughtful she is. Plus, she can cook really well.

Phuong: I appreciate An’s kindness, commitment and, most of all, how willing he is to be a part of my family. He’s always made an effort to build a genuine relationship with the people I love, which means so much to me.

We've heard all about it in store, but tell us again about your romantic proposal that An so thoughtfully planned!

An: I planned a little private photoshoot in a beautiful garden. We went for a scenic drive, dressed up and spent some time looking around for the perfect view. The weather, however, had other plans! We got caught in the rain a few times, but decided to push through and make the most of it. Eventually, the rain settled and everything just felt right. I set up the camera so we could capture the moment, and when the timing felt perfect, I popped the question.

Phuong: An planned what I thought was a simple picnic, with a little photoshoot using our Fujifilm camera. He even subtly suggested that I wear white and get my nails done, so I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a little suspicious. It rained a little on the day, but we found a secluded spot for some photos. That’s where An surprised me and popped the question. It was intimate, thoughtful and very us.  

We love how much thought and effort An went into designing your gorgeous engagement ring. Tell us about your experience with The Classic Jewellers and any tips you have for couples searching for their engagement rings?

An: My biggest tip is to really know what your partner wants. The ring is a representation of how well you know her, so pay attention to the little hints — especially the designs she shows you on Instagram. I also think it’s nice to add a little personal touch of your own, but keep it subtle. For example, you could include an engraving or a stone on the inside of the band that has a special meaning to you both. Most importantly, trust the experts. They can take all those little details and help bring the ring your partner envisioned to life.

Phuong: An put so much thought into designing my engagement ring, so it was really special to see the final piece come together. Our experience with The Classic Jewellers was amazing from start to finish. Jess was so patient and helpful throughout the process, and made what can feel like an overwhelming decision feel really personal and enjoyable. We never felt pressured and really appreciated how much Jess listened to what we wanted. Our biggest tip for couples would be to take your time, do your research and choose something that feels personal to you rather than getting caught up in trends. Most importantly, enjoy the process!       

What are you both looking forward to in this next chapter together?

An: More dates, more food and more travelling together!

Phuong: We’re most looking forward to travelling the world together, experiencing new places and creating memories along the way. More than anything, we’re excited to build a meaningful life together and see where this next chapter takes us.
